\”Bless that Wonderful Name of Jesus,\” Traditional African American Congregational Song

Over the years, I have experienced the power of Jesus\’ name. Sunday night, Micah and I were watching \”Lemonade\” by Beyonce\’. Toward the end of the short-film, there was a scene where a lady said, \”When you in trouble, who you gon\’ call on? You got to call on Jesus!\”
That segment took me back to the congregational song, \”Bless that wonderful name of Jesus.\” Acts 4:12 says, \”Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved\” (KJV). Mark 16:17 says, \”And these signs  will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons…\” (NIV).
I have experienced the power of the name of Jesus in many situations. When I was in seminary at Candler School of Theology (Emory University) in Atlanta, I went to a worship service in Columbus, Georgia, one weekend to sing with my brothers (A7). On the way back to Atlanta, driving in my 1996 Ford Explorer, it was raining. The suv hydroplaned! It spun around on the highway amidst oncoming traffic. All I could do was scream repeatedly, \”Jesus!\”
Even while re-telling this story, I feel the presence of God — the same as entered into my car thatrainy Sunday evening! Suddenly, it seemed as if the oncoming traffic went into slow motion. Soon, the suv entered into a highway median and halted!
I have gone back to the area I thought the situation happened. But, I can\’t seem to find a place where there was a grassy highway median. All I found in that area are steep ditches off the sides of the highway. It sends chills over my body to admit that the powerful name of Jesus must have created sort of an \”oasis in the desert!\” Only, in this case, calling on the name of Jesus must have created a highway median in the middle of concrete.

In any case, it is just like God to make a way where there seems there is no way!

Bless that wonderful name of Jesus

No other name I know!

There is power in the name of Jesus

No other name I know!

Grace and peace,
Antipas
