The Doctor of Ministry in Global Urban Leadership is a collaboration with Pentecostal Theological Seminary (hereafter, PTS) [https://www.ptseminary.edu/doctor-of-ministry.php] in providing a contextual theological formation of faith leaders in Global Urban Leadership and in the tradition of Wesleyan-Holiness Pentecostal spirituality and theology.

Dr. Antipas found the Urban Renewal Center in 2017 in response to growing racial factions in the United States of America, so the church may bear faithful witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ amid this strife. The URC has mobilized the Hampton Roads faith community on race through social projects, faith community, and early projects with youth impact. URC believes that the church has a vital role in advancing a more just society, mending broken people, and showing compassion to people in need of redemption and healing.

Churches globally face an ongoing need to enhance their effectiveness in congregational life and local communities. Congregational transformational leadership not only affects the congregational culture but also mobilizes local congregations in the call of ministry to the public square. Post-COVID, there is a greater demand for churches to be “churches for the cities.” Churches for the cities need highly trained “pastors for the cities.” 

Faith leaders share in public conversations and strategic guidance during pandemics, tragedies, personal and communal crises in cities. As a Spirit-filled, educated, and experienced Christian leader, you see the need for higher level of spiritual, transformational, and contextually reflective preparation to lead in the practice of ministry amid the complexities of everyday life. Transformational leadership characterized the ministries of Jesus and the early church. 

This Doctor of Ministry in Global Urban Leadership aims to foster a high level of congregation transformational leadership, bridging the gap between congregational ministry and ministry beyond the walls of the church. It has a particular interest in the intellectual reservoir for ongoing praxis-oriented reflection in urban contexts with global perspectives.

The Spirit renews material chaos in Genesis 1. This spiritual work sets the theological stage for God’s intimate concern for a world in need of continued renewal. This DMin focus area, moreover, locates urban ministry as an essential part of many Pentecostal and Charismatic traditions that have emphasized the life and pragmatic work of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual pragmatism is the work of the Holy Spirit in advocating for social justice, acts of compassion, re-visioning mercy ministry, and mobilizing local congregations within the global context to participate in God’s work beyond the walls of the church in the complexities of urban life.  

Purpose for Doctor of Ministry Degree at PTS

The primary purpose of the Pentecostal Theological Seminary Doctor of Ministry degree program is to nurture, and train selected men and women to minister from a Wesleyan-Pentecostal perspective at an advanced level of competency. The degree addresses the general practice of ministry while allowing the student to focus on one ministerial vocation. We will expect graduates to function in the truest sense as “doctors” of ministry, persons who influence others toward effective Christian service.

The ministerial vocations include but are not limited to (1) preaching the Word, (2) teaching the Faith, (3) providing pastoral care, (4) counseling (including professional counseling), (5) evangelizing the lost, (6) leading in worship, (7) discipling others in Christian living, (8) challenging and enabling all members of the faith community to fulfill their callings in Christ, (9) facilitating Koinonia within and among Christian congregations, (10) modeling and facilitating Christian ministries of mercy and justice in society at large, (11) overseeing and administering various expressions of the church and its ministries.
