My Soul Loves Jesus

My soul loves Jesus; my soul loves Jesus;

my soul loves Jesus, bless His name

My soul loves Jesus; my soul loves Jesus;

my soul loves Jesus, bless His name

He’s a wonder in my soul; He’s a wonder in my soul;

He’s a wonder in my soul, bless His name

He’s a wonder in my soul; He’s a wonder in my soul;

He’s a wonder in my soul, bless His name.

“My Soul Loves Jesus,” Traditional Congregational Song

Life brings many challenges as well as opportunities. In either case, God is faithful to stick with us. May we respond to God\’s faithfulness in caring for the spiritual nature of the soul.

Spiritual soul-care soothes the inner person and helps us to learn to appreciate opportunities and to remain resilient through challenges. Prayer, meditation, attending church and other worship expressions such as singing and playing musical instruments are spiritual practices when soul is in it.

One may think of soul as being the music of the heart. Going through the motions is not enough. Soul draws together human experience and a spiritual connection with God.

We must let the music of the heart reveal the wonderment of our innermost being. Through the good and bad, hurts and joys, love and betrayals, victories and disappointments, Jesus has been there all the time. He remains faithful to us even when we are not faithful to Him.

When I think about Christ’s deep love and faithfulness, it overwhelms me. The words of that ole worship song comes to mind:

He’s a wonder in my soul, bless His name.

King David speaks of the awe-struck wonder of the Lord when he says,

Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. (Psalm 66:16)

Indeed, God cares for the soul!

As an act of gratitude for what God does for us, we must tend to our souls. Nineteenth century Christian writer William Scott Downey says,

Would men take the same care of their souls as they do of their bodies, we should find our churches as thronged upon the Sabbath, as our markets are upon a Saturday.

Loving Jesus glorifies Him through soul-care. All-to-often, we relish in God’s faithfulness but fail to tend to our souls. Another nineteenth century minister Henry Ward Beecher said, “The soul is often hungrier than the body, and no shops can sell it food.” As we go throughout our day, let’s meditate on the Word of God. Only God can fill the hungry soul. Psalms 107:9 states,

For he [God] satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

Let’s spend time praying and singing melodies in our hearts to the Lord.

May our souls love on Jesus!
